On the History of RAST

Regular instruction on the Jungian Sandplay Therapy started in 1995 at the Psychology Faculty of St. Petersburg State University. This programme was due to Dr. June Atherton, a Jungian Analyst, a Sandplay Therapist, a Visiting Professor of Jungian Studies and Sandtherapy at St. Petersburg State University.  Dr. J.Atherton is a student of Dora Kalff, a Swiss analytical psychologist, the author of the Jungian Sandplay therapy method.  Dr. June Atherton is the founder and the head of the International Institute of Sandplay Therapy (Ireland, Dublin) and President of the International Jungian Sandtherapy Association (IJSTA).

The First International Jungian Sandtherapy Conference was held in St. Petersburg State University in 1999. It involved participants from Ireland, Japan, Australia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. May 13th 1999 saw the foundation of Russian Association for Sandplay Therapy (RAST) by a group of specialists certified in this field. IJSTA helped the recently formed organization in working out its basic norms.

The members of new Association regularly met at supervisions where they presented case studies, discussed various works in the field.

The International Seminar was held in St. Petersburg State University in 2004 with an assistance of RAST.  Professionals from Russia, Ireland, Baltic states presented papers and case studies. It was at the seminar concerned the coordination meeting of IJSTA’s members delegated the coordinated centre power to the Russian branch.

In 2004 RAST was registered as a collective member of the Professional Psychotherapeutic League (PPL) in Russia.

Since RAST foundation the activity of the Association has been growing and the Association has been accepting new members. Group supervisions of RAST’s members have been carried on every month. Pair supervisions, discussions of fairy tale symbols, of the meanings of symbols in sandtrays and training video reviews have been carried on too. Similar seminars and supervisions are also held in some other Russin cities (Arkhangelsk, Vladivostok, Chelyabinsk, Khabarovsk).

At present the Association is developing the Sandplay Therapy Study Programme headed by Dr. June Atherton at the Psychology Faculty of St. Petersburg State University. Specialists already trained in the Programme have got a chance to participate in seminars headed by professionals from Ireland (Orla Crowly, Padraic Dolan, Jean Casey O’Kelly and some others).

During the some years master-classes in sandplay therapy have been carried on by Dr. June Atherton.
